The Blessing of Discretion

With the overwhelming presence and popularity of social media, the definition of “privacy” has evolved significantly. “If you don’t post it, it didn’t happen” is the motto… but should it be? Although living life on a platform can create wonderful opportunities and connect us to the world around us, without wisdom it can also lead to comparison, competition, and many other unhealthy societal pressures. We enjoy posting our milestones and staying in tune with our network, but the reality is . . . most of us actually struggle to decide what to share and what to keep private. What’s the healthy balance between staying in the loop socially and maintaining our personal lives? As Believers, even our testimonies and spiritual revelations are for an appointed time and should be guarded until then. Join us as we explore the true blessing of discretion.

The Spirit of Offense

How often do you get offended? Do you accept criticism with grace or do you tend to reject it? Are you self-aware enough to accept correction from others? Tough conversations are both inevitable and often times necessary. As either the initiator or the receiver, it is up to us to decide how we will handle confrontational situations. Delivery, tone, and approach all contribute to a conversation’s possible success or failure; however, the posture of our heart and one’s perspective can be the difference between acceptance and offense.

Frustration Vs. Judgment

It’s a thin line between being frustrated and passing judgment. We should be mindful that our words have power: the power to tear down or build up, the power to inspire or lead others astray, the power to purify or poison someone’s reputation, and the power to positively or negatively affect our personal ministry & fellowship with Christ. It is common for us to experience moments of displeasure and irritation in our interpersonal relationships. Although God never promised us a life devoid of negative experiences, how we speak about people can be the difference between honoring and dishonoring Christ, ourselves and others. Frustration is not a sin and neither is expression, however both can lead to unwholesome and ungodly speech. Are you simply frustrated or are you judging your neighbor?

What About Your Friends?

Everyone needs a friend, whether it be for a season or a lifetime. However, navigating these relationships can sometimes get tricky. We often don’t know when to hold tight and when to gracefully let go. As a Godly friend, we are called to steward well over our connections, discern seasonal shifts in our community, and display qualities that mirror Christ. Jesus was communal, we should be too!
